Artist Statement

For most of my career I have been an abstract painter. My monochromatic Color Field paintings explored subtle modulations of hue and application. I was primarily influenced by Mark Rothko and Richard Diebenkorn. Music also inspired me, such as the dark tonalities of Schubert’s Winterreise.

During the past decade I  became interested in photography and began documenting the urban landscape. I realized that what I had to say could only be expressed through representational art and in 2005 I began painting these images. My love of the Italian Renaissance also compelled me in this direction. I wanted to try to bring the quality of Giovanni Bellini’s color and light to paintings that are concerned with creating an evidence of the desolate landscape.

Compositions are started on the computer and then evolve over months during the process of painting which involves dozens of layers of oil paint and glazes. I also have a series of black and white paintings based on appropriated images which relate to the history of the landscape surrounding my studio in Hunters Point.
