Paintings have often been referred to as windows; both windows and paintings offer a glimpse into private experiences. In this most recent series, Gage Opdenbrouw shares his outlook and, literally, his look out, into the world. He follows the path laid by many historic and important painters; each of them negotiated the unique, painterly problem of representing two or more spaces within the same image. At its simplest, how can a stroke of one color, placed within another, evoke the feeling of a particular kind of light?
In answering the question, and as much as practicality allows, Opdenbrouw paints from life, from direct observation, slowly accumulating moments, colors, lighting effects and examinations that add up to an image.
Gage Opdenbrouw was born and raised in San Jose, California in 1977 and resides in San Francisco. He has had solo and group shows in the Bay Area and across the country.
