New and recent portraits by Becky Robbins in the side gallery offer a fresh and very present perspective on the individual subjects, created in the ancient method of encaustic painting. Robbins has traveled world-wide and her portraits – as an example of confluence - both emerge from, and embody, a foreign or exotic community-identity, while at the same time representing individuals from those communities.
Other influences arise from the artists’ interests in the sea and plants, Science, a quest to unravel ancient sacred geometries, new theories in medicine and explorations in space. Robbins believes that in all these areas shapes repeat, new colors are created, unknown becomes known and movement, including stillness, are essential. Encaustic is also known as hot wax painting; it involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigment is added, usually done on board and in a layering process. Unlike oil or acrylic, light passes through the translucent layers and is reflected back to the surface, creating a luminosity that is the key characteristic of encaustic.
Becky Robbins has been reading about and studying art since she was a child. She immersed herself in learning encaustic and other painting techniques after a successful career in developing motivational and educational systems that helped thousands of people bring accomplishments into their lives.
