Our side gallery features a series of revitalized paintings by Noah Phyllis Levin. Their completion in 2005 coincided with a sidelining of the artists career. After many years of struggle against several obstacles, the artist recently emerged with a vitality that offers hope for a return to the life of an artist.
The inherent subjects of Levin’s paintings are light and mood. They are expressed in the former by bright sunshine permeating swimming pools and ponds and, in the latter, by an absorbed darkness that sets the stage for mystery and interpretation. Levin’s approach is the antithesis to David Hockney’s obvious handling of brilliant reflected light: her technique offers viewers a challenge – or opportunity - to reflect upon light amidst the dark. The result offers two sided interactions, one personal, the other ambiguous.
Noah P. Levin earned a Bachelors degree (B.A. English) at Stanford. She received a Masters in Painting from San Francisco State University in 1980. The Gallery is pleased to present this series which have not been shown together as a group at ArtZone.
