Susan Danis: "Celebrating the Universe" at Artzone 461  |  Art Ltd. Magazine | DeWitt Cheng | September 1, 2010

Surrealism extolled the imaginative transformation of found objects ... East Bay artist Susan Danis continues that tradition, transforming anonymous materials into strange and funny objets d'art. An intrepid scavenger, Danis forages in thrift stores and hardware stores for socks, shoes, dentures, toys, garters, feather boas, dolls, rope, hearing-aid cord, shoelaces, and parakeet bells; and in nature (as well as specialized shops) for amber, coral, barnacles, feathers, horns, claws, pearls, teeth, fish vertebrae, human and animal hair, and the odd freeze-dried mole ...
                                                                                                     read more >http://www.artltdmag.com/index.php?subaction=showfull&id=1283537175&archive=&start_from=&ucat=32&

Luggage Store "Rehistoricizing" | San Francisco Chronicle | Kenneth Baker | July 3, 2010

Regard "Rehistoricizing Abstract Expressionism in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1950s-1960s" at the Luggage Store as a sketch for the exhibition it purports to be. Fuzzy on factual details and time frame, it nevertheless assembles works not easy to see together anywhere else: drawings by Jay DeFeo, a knockout 1961 painting by the recently deceased Deborah Remington, an early work by Cornelia Schulz, an outstanding recent one by José Ramón Lerma and much else.
                                                                                                          read more >http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/07/03/DDM81E7GCU.DTL&type=printable

Who's your Dada now? | Mercury News | Sal Pizarro | September 24, 2010

"The Seduction of Duchamp," the new exhibition at the Los Gatos Art Museum, provides a look at the Dadaist artist through the work of three dozen Bay Area artists. Best of all, two Duchamp drawings, from 1910 and 1915, are part of the show. Both this exhibition, first shown at San Francisco's ArtZone 461 Gallery, and a parallel one on Duchamp's life at the Los Gatos History Museum run through Oct. 22.

Don't Miss AQUA: Art on Water at ArtZone 461 Gallery in the Mission | Examiner & Associated Content | V. Williamson | October 06, 2010

This is an interesting exhibit in that it doesn't feature one artist, one form of media, one time period or one style. The binding characteristic here, of course, is water and fluidity. From the historical to the contemporary, oil paintings to wood cuts, you'll see artists reference water in all its many forms. read more >http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/5866220/dont_miss_aqua_art_on_water_at_artzone.html?cat=8

ArtZone 461 Gallery: AQUA Art on Water | ArtBusiness.com | RWM | September 19, 2010

The variety of approaches to capturing water here leaves one with the impression that so many perspective are possible, one cannot help but define their personal experience and sensation. ArtZone 461 Gallery: Terry Thompson - Urban Signs | ArtBusiness.com | RWM | December 18, 2010

...the impressive paintings of Terry Thompson. He evokes the past in his paintings of commercial signs that still survive from a bygone era. You may well remember different times here. The signs depicted were art objects themselves when constructed, showcasing neon lights and stylish designs. Marvel at their commemoration expressed in these paintings. read more > http://www.artbusiness.com/1open/121810.html

ArtZone’s Fabulous Floating Spiral Tree | 2 KTVU.com | December 12, 2010

For this original Holiday Tree; consummate, imaginative recycler Steven Lopez repurposed two found hoops of white 1/2” PVC tubing to create a double helix that makes up the Tree structure. The Tree is layered in same-colored ornaments, almost like a cake. It stands 8 feet tall as it floats 2.5 feet above the floor. read more >http://my.ktvu.com/_artzone461-has-tagged-ArtZones-Fabulous-Floating-Spiral-Tree/PHOTO/11971427/6704.html

ArtZone 461 Gallery: Randy Beckelheimer - Wider Views of Urban San Francisco | ArtBusiness.com | RWM | January 22, 2011

Interesting exploration of place by Randy Beckelheimer... One finds here the city landscape captured when the time is right-- old buildings with history. Beautiful yet solemn presentation of the San Francisco shipping yards, but beautiful sunsets either way...These portrayals of place remind us of the variability of experience and expectations. read more >http://www.artbusiness.com/1open/012211.html
In Beckelheimer’s poetic paintings, the artist offsets the ghostly and apocalyptic landscape of the abandoned shipyard with his depictions of the beautiful light. In the spirit of the Venetian Renaissance painters he creates a soft atmospheric rendering of the shipyard by painting wet into wet oil paint, creating layers of transparent glazes. read more >http://www.artpractical.com/review/wider_views_of_urban_san_francisco/

A Modernist Proposal at Craft and Cultural Arts Gallery | East Bay Express | DeWitt Cheng | April 6, 2011

"Visions! omens! hallucinations! miracles! ecstasies! ... Dreams! adorations! illuminations! religions!" Artist Jos Sances quoted Allen Ginsberg's Beat anthem "Howl" in 2000 as a tribute to artist José Ramón Lerma for a show in San Francisco. Lerma's paintings and assemblages, now on view in Oakland, deserve the rhapsodies... read more >http://www.eastbayexpress.com/gyrobase/a-modernist-proposal-at-craft-and-cultural-arts-gallery/Content?oid=2561558

Strange Gifts:  Livia Stein and Susan Danis' yin-yang of artful unpredictability | bohemian.com | Kylie Mendonca | May 5, 2011

Both Danis and Stein share a penchant for eccentric fashion, bright colors and candid discourse, though their delivery is unique: Stein is the pragmatist; Danis, the fantasist. Stein's work is color, imagery—brushstrokes fixed to canvas; Danis' sculptures seem to have their own gravity, as if they had spontaneously materialized... read more >http://www.bohemian.com/bohemian/05.25.11/arts-1121.html

ArtZone 461: Nicholas Coley - Painting Around the Bay | ArtBusiness.com | DeWitt Cheng | June 19, 2010

Nicholas Coley, trained in France, makes dynamic landscape paintings that combine Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and Bay Area figuration, so his "Painting Around the Bay" seems almost an extension of the Orsay Impressionism show currently at the de Young.
