JACQUES VILLON (1875-1963)
“Marcel Duchamp’s older brother, was a French cubist painter, and printmaker. Born Gaston Emile Duchamp, he adopted the pseudonym of Jacques Villon as a tribute to the French medieval poet François Villon.
In 1913, Villon created his cubist masterpieces — seven large drypoints in which forms break into shaded pyramidal planes. That year, he exhibited at the famous Armory Show in New York City that helped introduce European modern art to the United States.
Marcel Duchamp learned academic drawing from a teacher who unsuccessfully attempted to protect his students from Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and other avant-garde influences. However, Duchamp's true artistic mentor was his brother Jacques Villon, whose fluid and incisive style he sought to imitate.
In May 2004, an oil painting by Villon dated 1913 entitled "L'Acrobate" and measuring 39 ¼ by 28 ¼ inches sold at Sotheby's for $1,296,000 (US dollars).” excerpt from Wikipedia
